Let's Talk About AI

Everything you need to get started with AI today!

Hey there!

Welcome, again, to Leaders Learn AI!

You’ve taken such an important step towards unlocking the power of AI in your everyday life and work. So let’s get straight to the good stuff.

But first: I hope you’ve taken some time to browse the Free AI-At-Work Resource Library. If not, go do that now and let me know what you think.

I’ll be updating this library periodically with more and more valuable resources just for you!

Let’s Start With The Basics

If you’re new to AI, it can feel like an overwhelming black box. But the truth is, AI isn’t here to replace you—it’s here to amplify your strengths.

Imagine having a personal assistant that never sleeps, organizes your workday, brainstorms your ideas, and helps you draft emails or reports in seconds. That’s what generative AI tools, like ChatGPT, can do for you.

So what is AI? Let’s explore some key AI concepts and terms in a simple, relatable way.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes tasks like problem-solving, understanding language, and recognizing patterns.

Example: Think of a smartphone that can predict the words you're about to type—this is AI at work!

Common AI Terms

Machine Learning (ML)
ML is a part of AI that allows computers to learn from data and improve over time without needing specific programming for each task.

Example: When Netflix suggests movies based on your past viewing habits, that’s ML.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)
NLP helps computers understand and respond to human language—think of voice assistants like Siri or Alexa.

Example: Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa use NLP to understand and respond to your voice commands. When you ask Alexa for the weather and get a verbal response, that’s NLP at work.

Algorithms
An algorithm is simply a set of instructions or rules a computer follows to solve a problem or complete a task.

Example: Imagine a recipe. It's a step-by-step guide (an algorithm) for how to bake a cake!

Neural Networks
Neural networks are designed to mimic the human brain. They help computers recognize patterns and make decisions.

Example: Facial recognition on your phone that unlocks it by identifying your face uses neural networks.

Generative AI
Generative AI refers to AI systems that can create new content, like text, images, or music, based on prompts.

Example: Tools like ChatGPT, which can write emails or generate reports when given instructions, use generative AI.

Get familiar with these common AI related terms. It’s a good first step toward understanding this technology.

Use one or more of these terms in a conversation this week. Or share this information with someone who can benefit from it. #PayItForward

AI in Everyday Life

You’re probably already using AI daily without even realizing it. Here are some examples of how AI is already integrated into common tools:

  • Email filtering: AI helps sort your emails into categories like “Primary,” “Promotions,” or “Spam.”

  • Online shopping recommendations: AI suggests products based on your browsing and purchase history.

  • Navigation apps: AI predicts the fastest routes using real-time traffic data.

Why AI Matters for Professionals

AI can make your job easier and boost productivity by automating repetitive tasks, helping you analyze large amounts of data, and providing new ways to innovate at work.

Example: Instead of spending hours on data entry, AI tools can handle it for you while you focus on more strategic work.

Actionable Steps to Get Started with AI Today

  • Start Small: Use AI-powered tools that you’re already familiar with, like voice assistants or email filters. Explore their full functionality.

  • Explore Generative AI: Try out a tool like ChatGPT to draft an email, summarize a report or long document, or even brainstorm new ideas.

  • Stay Curious: AI is rapidly evolving, so make a habit of learning new tips and tools that can help boost your productivity.
